Brass tacks in Glossop
British brass bands produce some of the world’s most recognisable and foot-tapping amateur music. Believe it or not, brass bands actually date back to the 14th century when trumpets were used by the military to hearten the troops, and by church and state to strike a note of awe during grandiose occasions. The bold music we’re more familiar with these days evolved during the Industrial Revolution when employers began to sponsor work bands under the banner of individual factories, mills and mines.
This was not entirely a public relations exercise, nor was benevolence the overriding factor. In a time of urbanisation and poor living conditions, it was felt the more time workers spent practicing music, the less time they had for political unrest. Currently, there are thousands of brass bands in the UK, including our very own Glossop Old Band, which has been around since the 1830s, and Arnfield Brass Band in Tintwistle, formed in 2001. Glossop itself has contributed significantly to the distinctive brass band movement, as the modern brass instrument valve system was invented here!
Appreciating the potential of the Glossop Old Band under the leadership of conductor Alex Owen, a local businessman acquired the Bandroom in Derby Street where the players could rehearse – and this is still in use today. Walk by any Tuesday evening, and you’ll hear them practising. Better still, drop in and enjoy the music. For Glossop Old Band, the 60s, 70s and 80s were particularly golden years when, led by Barry Hinde, it won many competitions and was renowned for excellent concert performances.
Fortunately, due to Arts Council Lottery funding, the band is still very much in tune under the baton of present Musical Director Phil Pavey, and has purchased a full set of instruments for the junior training band, which will no doubt emulate the successes of their seniors. The most recent achievement was winning 5th and 6th place in the 2009 and 2010 Brass Band Championships respectively. The band has also helped raise thousands of pounds for worthy causes by participating in local charity events.
Though a relative newcomer, Arnfield Brass Band from Tintwistle has already won hearts with an entertaining programme that caters for all tastes. Musical Director Adrian Loader is looking for new members, so if you can play Eb Bass, Bb Bass, Solo Cornet, 3rd Cornet or Flugel Horn, then give him a call. Failing that, you could visit the Tintwistle Liberal and Working Men’s Club any Wednesday between 8 and 10pm when the band will be practicing.
