Experts in their field – and right here in Glossop!
The Pilates Studio on Surrey Street has been open for nine years this September. It runs a variety of Modern Pilates classes, as well as kettle bell and indoor cycling. The Pilates Studio is different because its four tutors are all clinical Pilates instructors. Cherry Baker and Sheila Done both hold level four Postural Stability qualifications and are well known for their expertise in back care and rehabilitation.
Cherry Baker says, “We have trained for years with physiotherapists and experts in the field of rehabilitation, as well as having many years in fitness and coaching. There are many different types of Pilates but we teach Modern Pilates, which was the first training programme to be given full national standard recognition. Not all Pilates classes are the same. Some Pilates classes may actually be bad for your back! Not all Pilates teachers are clinically trained so would not know how to deal with a lady after a hysterectomy or someone who has had a disc problem or a hip replacement. ”
Feedback from their clients show us they are experts in
their field!
Hayley from Glossop had personal training with Cherry throughout her pregnancy: “During my pregnancy I was diagnosed with SPD / PGP which affected my pelvis and at one point I was on crutches. Cherry helped me stay positive and I was confident she really did have the knowledge to help me. What Cherry doesn’t know about the body and exercising during pregnancy isn’t worth knowing.”
Nick, who is a long distance runner came to classes to help improve his pelvic and core stability after suffering from runners knee: “Attending classes speeded up my recovery. I still go as this exercise compliments my running.”
John: “I suffer with Diabetes and Parkinsons and started with the group some 4 years ago. The workouts have contributed to stabilizing my symptoms and enabling me to have a normal life.”
Both Cherry and Sheila are course directors and assessors for Modern Pilates, Later Life Training and Central YMCA Qualifications. At weekends they travel the length and breadth of the country training other teachers. This year Cherry was awarded the IFS Life Time achievement Award for Recognition in the industry 2011. She has previously won YMCA Tutor of the Year 1994 and Fitness Instructor of the Year with Exercise England 1993. Cherry is also off to present at a Fitness and Pilates convention in Tel Aviv. She says, “I am lucky enough to present at all the major conventions in the UK and have done for many years. This year I was asked to present in Tel Aviv after a physiotherapist who works there had attended one of the sessions I delivered at Loughborough University.”
